Jana Ašenbrennerová is a Czech photojournalist and visual anthropologist based in San Francisco. She documents the human side of medicine, working closely with doctors, surgeons, and medical teams, building long-term relationships that allow for intimate moments to unfold. Her stories often focus on patient journeys, women’s health, and the realities of care in remote parts of the world.
For more than fifteen years, she has worked in medical environments across South and Southeast Asia, sub-Saharan Africa, Europe, and the United States. Her work follows patients through some of the most challenging moments of their lives, often in places where geography defines access to care. In her stories, medicine is always present, but never at the center. People are.
Jana has collaborated with medical institutions and nonprofit organizations, including Malteser International, ALS Network, and People in Need. Her work has been recognized by World Press Photo, the National Geographic Photo Contest, Czech Press Photo, and the International Photo Awards.
She has also led photography and storytelling expeditions for National Geographic Student Travel in Bhutan, India, the Czech Republic, and the Canadian Arctic.
In 2024, she was named a Fellow International of The Explorers Club.
