A breathtaking journey of writing and exploration in partnership with the Himalayan Writers Workshop.

Ethical Traveler and the Himalayan Writers Workshop invite you to experience the extraordinary arts, spiritual life, and beauty of Nepal this coming November. During our 10-day exploration of Kathmandu and its environs we will immerse ourselves in the daily life of the former kingdom, and write intimate, spontaneous sketches which encapsulate our personal connections with the vibrant energy of this ancient Himalayan realm.

Jeff Greenwald (Ethical Traveler’s Executive Director) has written three books set in Nepal (including Shopping for Buddhas and Snake Lake) and will serve as a local guide and cultural liaison. Laurie Wagner is a brilliant writing coach, and the creator of 27Powers.org. James Hopkins, an accomplished poet with a deep Buddhist practice, has lived in Nepal since 2007.

Our itinerary is inspiring. We’ll begin our mornings with meditation, followed by a session of “wild writing:” a loose and liberating writing technique. Afterwards we’ll explore the temples and alleyways of the Kathmandu Valley, meet with artists and spiritual leaders, enjoy spectacular views of the Himalaya (weather permitting!) and peruse the amazing bazaars of the old city. We will also learn about some of the challenges faced by this landlocked country as it attempts to build a fledgling democracy in a charged political region, balance ties with neighboring India and China, and provide sanctuary to thousands of Tibetan refugees.

It’s going to be quite a journey. Please join us!
