2008 Beijing Olympics - ET Special Report |
|
Controversy is brewing over this year's Olympic games and its ethically-challenged host. The Chinese Government argues that the Olympics is a sporting event and should not be linked to politics. Human rights groups and other organizations beg to differ. These groups are using the occasion to raise awareness of various issues including:
- Systematic human rights abuses in China
- Oppressive 57-year occupation of Tibet
- Repression of religious and other freedoms
- Brutal persecution of the Falun Gong
- Cynical indifference to the genocide in Darfur
- Support for the cruel ruling junta in Burma
Should issues of human rights be a part of the Olympic equation? Or should the games be kept separate from the political arena?
To learn more about the issues, check out our News, Opinion, Action and Resources pages. We will be publishing this special section from now through the 2008 Olympic Games in August. |
